| Concerns were raised over the 22-year-old's new deal, which will keep him at the Nou Camp until 2016, by FIFPro president Philippe Piat.
The worldwide player's union representative suggested the player's contract was illegal; explaining the maximum length of a contract should not exceed five years.
"According to rules adopted in 2001 at the Commission, the duration of a contract should be between one and five years. Messi's new contract with Barcelona is until 2016," Piat told Marca.
However, La Blaugrana have hit back at these suggestions and claim the FIFA World Player of the Year-elect's new contract does not break any rules.
"FC Barcelona wants to clarify that in any case, the renewal of that contract player was carried out in full compliance with state labour laws and, of course, under current FIFA rules," read a club statement.
"The contract that joins Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona strictly observes the laws and regulations in force and in particular the provisions that are applicable in relation to the length of contract and unilateral termination clause."
The diminutive Argentine, who has been with the Barca since the age of 13, is now the club's top earner, with his salary jumping from €8.1million (£7.3m) per annum to a whopping €9.5million (£8.5m).
That equates to about £165,000-a-week for the No.10, who helped Pep Guardiola's men to an unprecedented treble last year with a stunning 38 goals and 18 assists in just 51 appearances. | |
